Notes / Reviews

Argentine singer-songwriter Juana Molina has never been one to shy away from artistic adventure, aptly illustrated by her most famous decision--to switch from a successful television comedy career to music. On UN DIA, her fifth album, Molina disappears further down the experimental path she's taken since opening up for David Byrne on a record that recalls the legendary Talking Heads singer's experimentations with Brian Eno. Molina imbues her gently foreboding indie pop with tribal beats, avant-garde jazz snippets, and electronic loops as her breathy vocals fall back into the landscape, serving as yet another surreal instrument. The opening title song (and nominal single) swiftly descends into radiant delirium as chants swirl and exotica ensues. That the record is broken into tracks feels almost arbitrary; UN DIA plays like a one-breath concert, flowing freely and inventively, hooking the listener in layers.

Rolling Stone (p.131) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[L]ike Brian Wilson or Kevin Shields, Molina pulls off the most out-there material with melodies nearly as accessible as conventional pop."
Spin (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Constantly shifting layers of sound generate a freaky sensation of vertigo, with Molina's overdubbed swirling, soaring, and chattering in seemingly endless combinations..."
The Wire (p.60) - "The most satisfying tracks are those which introduce slight discord, as on 'Lo Dejamos,' where close harmonies and handclaps nudge against a restless background of metallic sounds..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's muffled, elusive: a patter of syncopation, a word, a vibrating note, suddenly lifting out then fading away again....It's as open-ended and full of possibility as its title."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.64) - Ranked #42 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2008" -- "Her fifth album focuses on mood....Hypnotic."
Clash (magazine) (p.121) - "UN DIA is a joyous, instinctive album from someone who loves experimenting, manipulating and pushing music's land borders."
Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.65) - "[T]he album accumulates gravity as the songs add up. Feel the pull."
